Did you know that there are 150 different types of headaches?

Different types of headaches are typically handled in different ways.

I won’t list all of the types, but here are the most common:

Tension headaches are a most common form of general headache is caused from stress and tension.

Sinus headaches, caused by inflammation of the sinus cavity (sometimes this occurs with a runny nose, cold, or even a specific allergy which produces too much mucus).

Migraines, often described as powerful and pounding which can last for hours or even days and might be triggered by something or recur. During a migraine, an upset stomach might occur, and even sensitivity to sound and light.

Cluster headaches typically give a piercing or harsh pain in the head, may be behind the eye, and may be throbbing. The face may flush and eyes water. (They are called cluster because they often repeat or come back frequently in a certain amount of days.) Alcohol and tobacco are two culprits, and apparently men get cluster headaches more than women, according to the National Headache Foundation. http://www.headaches.org/2008/12/11/the-complete-headache-chart/

Fever headaches are brought on during fever when blood vessels are swollen in the head.

Mixed Headache Syndrome is typically a migraine mixed with a tension headache.

Allergy headaches typically happen during certain times of the year during seasonal periods.

Hormone headaches typically occur during pregnancy, periods or menopause when hormones levels are changing.

Arthritis headaches typically occur in the back of the neck or head, caused by inflammation of the bones and restriction of blood flow.

Hangover headaches are caused due to dilation of and irritation of blood vessels from alcohol.

Hunger headaches can occur when blood sugar drops, from muscle tension, skipping a meal, oversleeping or poor diet.

Hypertension headaches most often occur in the morning, and can be suffered by those with high blood pressure

TMJ (temporomandibular) headaches could occur in those suffering with TMJ, with muscle contraction of the jaw, poor alignment or related.

General Exertion headaches may occur after physical exertion, strenuous exercise, or even passive exertion like coughing.

Depression headaches are most commonly related to tension or anxiety headaches, brought on my depression, negative feelings or anxiety – all perhaps repressed or hidden.

Chronic daily headaches refers to a headache that occurs more than 15 days per month.

Different things can trigger headaches in different people. If you suffer often, keep a diary and try to pinpoint what triggers your headache (a certain food or drink, for instance, or a certain type of pollen or environment.) This can help you try to avoid or prevent, and gives you information to share with your doctor if you need to.

If you have an ongoing headache, or something that progressively becomes worse, seek out a doctor who may want to test.
